Governor Pen Portraits and Business InterestsSimon Blake - Chair of Governors I have been a Governor at Whitefield for seven years now and following being Vice-chair for four of those years, I was elected Chair of the Governing Body from September 2016. Being part of the Whitefield community is an absolute privilege and whilst the role is challenging it is at the same time extremely rewarding. I try and involve myself as much as possible in school and in addition to being the Chair of the Governing Body I am also the lead governor for safeguarding. Outside of school I am a Communications and People Engagement Lead for a Digital directorate within the Department for Work and Pensions. I try and bring as much of my 15 years of Civil Service experience to my Governor role as possible but at the same time I am finding I can still learn a thing or two. It seems that no matter what your age, you can still learn something at school! I became a Whitefield Parent Governor in 2014.
I have lived in Penwortham for 20 years, having moved ‘up north’ after graduation to work in Engineering for BAE SYSTEMS. My industry experience has allowed me to take an active role in the Governor group providing an alternative perspective to discussions. I sit on the SSE committee, which offers the opportunity to work with the school and Governors using an engineering approach to analysing schools data. This data can indicate potential areas for improvement, helping to maintain the happy and effective learning environment for the children. I also support the school through Friends of Whitefield – helping the Summer Fair happen! My ‘day job’ is with BAE Systems where I have worked for 38 years, initially as an aircraft electrician which I enjoyed immensely as you could immediately see the results of your labour as completed aircraft took to the skies. For some reason best known to those involved in the mid 80’s, I was selected to transfer to a project management role from which I’ve progressed to my current role of leading all our current UK based work in support of an export customer. In my spare time, (excluding the demands of a wife and daughter), I enjoy golf, cycling and DIY to aid with relaxation, although the way I sometimes play golf doesn’t qualify as relaxation! I have been teaching for 21 years and have taught from Reception age through to KS3 (Yrs 7, 8 and 9 at high school). Before becoming a deputy head teacher in Blackpool I worked for Blackpool Local Authority as a Maths consultant supporting head teachers and staff with the teaching and learning of mathematics.
I loved working with data and trying to solve the challenges that we can sometimes face in school. I am also passionate about pupil voice and the children being the reasons behind the decision making in school. I am also the governor responsible for SEN, and I meet regularly with Mrs Adams to discuss provision across the school. The quality of teaching and learning across the school is a particular area of interest for me, along with communicating progress to parents. I am currently in my seventh year teaching at Whitefield where I have taught in Year 6 for the past 5 years. Teaching is my passion; watching the children in my care develop, grow and learn each day is an unbelievable feeling. As part of my role in school I lead mathematics which is a particular love of mine. Last year I was appointed as a mathematics specialist leader in which I travel to other schools in Lancashire to support them in their development of the teaching and learning of maths. In my spare time I teach latin, ballroom, street and cheer dance at Fever Dance Company, so lots of teaching!
