After going 1-0 down, we struck back through an excellent breakaway goal from Paige. Unfortunately, after conceding a goal with the last kick of the game, the final score was 2-1 to Fylde.

In the second game, we made six changes to the team as it was the turn of our Year Five girls – with Felicity in goal – to represent our school. Despite a whole-hearted, determined display, Darwin were the better team over the 10 minutes. Another goal from Paige wasn’t enough as we were beaten by 3-1.

Knowing we couldn’t qualify for the ‘Champions League’ competition, we experimented with the team to give everyone more playing time. All ten girls were involved in the final group game as we lost – 3-0 - to the eventual runners up, West Lancashire.

Following our lunch – and some positive words of encouragement from a few of the girls – we went into the afternoon session refreshed, re-energised and determined to win the ‘Europa League’ competition… and this is where our day got REALLY interesting!

Our Quarter final match pitted us against Chorley (and some of Naomi’s old school friends). Despite dominating the midfield with some brilliant passing from Felicity and wonderful dribbling from Paige, we found ourselves 1-0 down with only a few minutes to go. After a vital tackle from Aimee, Kiera played an excellent pass to Paige, who beat one defender before playing the ball into the path of Naomi who smashed the ball into the roof of the net! 1-1! …And to sudden-death penalties!

When we needed a hero, our amazing goalkeeper Esme stepped up! Penalty number one… saved! Penalty number two… saved! Penalty number three… saved! Penalty number four…saved! Penalty number five… a diving save to tip the ball onto the post! Saved! Unbelievable goalkeeping! So it was down to our fifth, and final, penalty taker: Kiera. As cool as a cucumber, she stepped up and slotted the ball into the bottom corner. Cue wild celebrations from the girls. We were into the semi-finals!

The Semi-final saw us facing Blackpool. It was a game, once again, in which we needed our goalkeeper to be in top form: Esme made some great diving saves and her kicking was fantastic too. After one of her saves, she passed the ball out to Paige who dribbled from the halfway line, slalomed passed three defenders and smashed the ball into the top corner. 1-0! Aimee, Kiera, Molly and Macy all made some vital tackles throughout the game as Sanuli, and Naomi worked tirelessly to stop the opposition and set up our counter-attacks. Unfortunately, Blackpool equalised and with only three minutes to go. We needed a super-sub. On came Millie! Just seconds after coming on, Molly won the ball, in our own half, with an excellently times tackle, Naomi picked up the ball and played it down the left wing to Millie, who cut inside and coolly slotted the ball into the bottom corner: giving the keeper no chance. Full time… 2-1 to Whitefield. We had made it to the final!

With excitement at fever-pitch, the final proved to be the perfect showcase for all the girls. Aimee and Kiera were solid in defense: making timely tackles and using their strength and power to stop the opposition. Esme made even more wonderful saves, Naomi led the line with strength when out of possession and calmness when on the ball and Felicity’s energy and ability to pick a pass was vital throughout. From being 1-0 down, we were quickly level through another solo goal from the always excellent Paige. At 1-1 we gambled! On came Molly and Macy, Millie and Sanuli and they didn’t disappoint! With only minutes left to play, Macy made a superb interception on the halfway line, shortly followed by a second tackle from Sanuli who passed the ball to Millie. Calmly, Millie played it to Paige who glided past one defender, then another. She was through on goal…

2-1! The crowd went wild! We were the Europa League champions!

A huge thank you and well done to all the girls who represented school so wonderfully in both tournaments. Their work rate, effort and commitment has been outstanding. They have asked for extra practices, played again the School B team and worked and worked to improve every time they trained and played. Each girl proved to be a vital component to the team and everyone at Whitefield is extremely proud of all of you. To finish as the 9th best girls football team in Lancashire is an incredible achievement. Well done girls!

http://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/images/news/IMG_1742.JPGSun, 09 Jul 2017 12:38:21 GMTDates for your diary http://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/news/latest/2017-06-26-dates-for-your-diaryhttp://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/news/latest/2017-06-26-dates-for-your-diary
DATES FOR YOUR DIARY – END OF SUMMER TERM REMINDERS

DATE

EVENT

INFO

YEAR GROUP

Tuesday 27th June, 12.45pm

QUADKIDS athletics

Y3&4

Children have been informed via letter if attending

Y3&4

Thursday 29th June

Hutton & PGHS induction day for Y6 pupils

Information sent home to parents in letter

Y6

Thursday 29th June, 7pm

All Hallows Parents Meeting

Current Y6 attending All Hallows in September

Y6

Thursday 29th June

Y4 cricket tournament at Vernon Carus

Children have been informed via letter if attending

Y4

Friday 30th June

All Hallows Transition Day 2

Current Y6 attending All Hallows in September

Y6

Monday 3rd July

Year 4 visit to Towneley Hall, Burnley

Y4

Tuesday 4th July 7.45-4.00

Lancashire School Games Final, Blackpool

Letters out today (Monday 26th)

Golf and football finals

Thursday 6th July

Priory Induction Day

Information sent home to parents in letter

Y6

Thursday 6th July

KS2 Cricket – Lancashire Finals

At Northern Cricket Club, Crosby – children have been informed via letter if attending

Friday 7th July

Y5 at Hutton Grammar, morning

Science, computing and PE

Y5

Monday 10th July, 2pm

New governor ballot count

Nominees have been invited to attend

Tuesday 11th July

Penwortham Fire Station in to Y6 – road safety

Preparation for high school

Y6

Thursday 13th July, 2.30

Reception assembly

For all parents and family members of children in Reception

YR

Thursday 13th July

End of Year reports to parents

All

Friday 14th July, 6-9pm

Friends of Whitefield Summer Fair

The biggest event in our social calendar! Your comments via Facebook and to myself and Mrs Smith have been lovely so thank you all too. We are going to do it again soon, and we noted the request for a grown up book swap!

Firstly though, we have our Book Fair week that starts on Monday 27th March (the last week of term) – it is a different book fair provider this time. We are using The Book People who offer books at discounted prices so we are excited about what they will bring. Mrs Smith will be sending out information next week once we get the promotion pack through from them.

Well done to the four Y6 children (Keira, Naomi, Leon and Ethan) who travelled to London on Friday with Mrs Willers and Miss Nuttall for a visit to the Houses of Parliament. Your behaviour was impeccable. They travelled with children from the 22 other schools in our WRIST local school cluster and had an amazing experience. I am looking forward to their assembly to the children and staff, letting us know about their day. I wonder if they met Theresa May?

The Friends of Whitefield held another amazingly successful Community Cinema last week. Trolls the movie was so funny! I could listen to Justin Timberlake’s voice all day…

The organisation for events like this takes time and planning and I am always astounded at how smoothly they run. Thank you to all the volunteers who came to set up and support during the movie, and thanks to all the families for speedy pick-ups afterwards.

Our next Friends of Whitefield meeting will be on Tuesday 14th March (next week) at 5.30pm in The Brown Hare pub – all are welcome. We are going to be looking at the finances and what we would like to spend it on in school so if you have any ideas, please email them through to admin@whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk with the title FOW SPENDING.

We will also be starting our plans for the summer fair as well as having a chat and a sneaky lemonade.

Miss Nuttall and Miss Ashcroft have noted that we are in need of new netball kits. If anyone out there would like to be our netball kit sponsor, please let us know.

Lots of things happening in school in the coming weeks too!

We have lots of governors in school next week for various activities.

Simon Blake, our chair of governors will be in school all day on Wednesday working with Ms Garry, the School Business Manager to start the production of our new school prospectus. They will be taking photographs and working out formats. It is very exciting! So the children might talk about them being around school all day with their cameras!

Dr Sarah Penman, one of our parent governors and also Head of Science at Hutton Grammar is in Year 5 on Wednesday afternoon to work with the children on their science skills and knowledge as part of our Science Week (see below for more info!)

And the Finance Committee of governors are in on Tuesday afternoon to set our budget for the coming year (April 2017-March 2018).

As mentioned, it is our Science week next week – each year group will be working on their investigational skills for the theme of Changes. Look out for the photos on Facebook and the school website. As well as Dr Penman, we also have Penwortham Girls High School in on Thursday morning to lead their science road show assembly for all the children.

And good luck to out Maths Challenge team who are off to Penwortham Girls High School on Monday for the annual maths competition.

Don’t forget – it is parents evening on Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd March – letters will be coming out tonight.

Letters are coming home tonight with all the arrangements for the Alice in Wonderland Year 3 and 4 production.

Year 6 children have all received a letter this week regarding SATurday school – please return the slip so we can get plans moving!

And make sure Red Nose Day is in your diary for Friday 24th March – wear something red, or a shade of.

Phew, think that’s it!

Have a great weekend everyone!
http://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/images/news/dafs.jpgThu, 09 Mar 2017 09:54:52 GMTWorld Book Dayhttp://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/news/latest/2017-03-02-world-book-dayhttp://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/news/latest/2017-03-02-world-book-day
World Book Day –2017

Do you remember Multi-coloured Swap Shop? On World Book Day Thursday 2nd March your children will be invited to take part in the first ever Whitefield Multi-coloured Book Swap! All they need to do is choose a book that they have enjoyed (but are ready to swap with another child), fill in the book insert provided by school, stick it in the front of the book, swap the book for a token at school, collect a different book that has been donated by one of their friends and… enjoy!

Obviously donated books need to be in good condition and come with a recommendation from the swapper. Children may swap more than one book if they choose to – the more they bring, the more they can swap.

Please note - we are not dressing up for book day!

http://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/images/news/World-Book-Day.jpgMon, 27 Feb 2017 15:19:06 GMTLent Assemblyhttp://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/news/latest/2017-02-27-lent-assemblyhttp://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/news/latest/2017-02-27-lent-assembly
We love it when Mike from Kings Church comes in to help us with our assemblies!

Today we were learning about Lent, and why we give things up for Lent.

Mike has challenged us to all give something up for 40 days, but he has also challenged us to do 40 acts of kindness over the Lent period, so one for every day.

We are up for that challenge!

We will be looking for acts of kindness from all our children, staff and families and we will be talking about them in our classes and assemblies!
http://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/images/1024x1024s/news/mike_faun_assembly_1.JPGMon, 27 Feb 2017 16:36:48 GMTMrs Foster's Newshttp://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/news/latest/2017-02-24-mrs-foster-s-newshttp://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/news/latest/2017-02-24-mrs-foster-s-news
Mrs Foster’s News

Welcome back to everyone after half term. I hope you all had a lovely week. It was the start of Milly Foster’s 10th birthday celebrations at our house and I survived a sleepover with 5 girls. Not quite sure Mr Foster survived – he said he is booking in to the Travel Lodge next time.

I’ve posted the list of dates for your diary on the website and facebook this week so make sure you transfer to your diaries.

Well done and congratulations to the school choir who performed at the Guild Hall last night as part of our cluster of schools Celebration of Friendship. I was at the rehearsals in the afternoon and a number of staff from other schools came up to me after our rehearsal and said how fantastic the children were! Well done! Pictures are on Facebook – whitefieldprimaryofficial.

A couple of requests and observations:

There are surprisingly some children coming to school without a coat. Please ensure they have one in school every day as we do go out to play in most weathers. If your child has lost theirs, it could be one of the numerous coats in the lost property pile on the infant corridor (along with jumpers, cardis, socks…)

We have contacted Penwortham Town Council at the end of last week about the amount of dog poo on the pathways around school. It was really bad last week and not want we all want to be seeing coming in to school. Another reason for some CCTV I feel….

Don’t forget, it’s the year group assembly for Y4 families on Thursday 26th January, 2.30pm in the hall. We’ll look forward to seeing you there.

Year group newsletters coming soon!

Remember to keep up to date with everything going on in school via our school Facebook page whitefieldprimaryofficial
http://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/images/1024x1024s/news/Mrs_F_pic_3.jpgWed, 18 Jan 2017 10:06:37 GMTWeather Warningshttp://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/news/latest/2017-01-10-weather-warningshttp://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/news/latest/2017-01-10-weather-warnings
WEATHER WARNINGS AND KEEPING UP TO DATE

I have just received my first snow weather warning from the Met Office via email! Lots going on and lots more to come so make sure you read the updates and reminders below!

Firstly, thank you all for your understanding regarding Mrs Kimberley and Miss King. We send our love to Mrs Kimberley’s husband who is very poorly at the moment and to Miss King who is recovering from her concussion.

The children in 2JK are working with Mr Brown and those in 1VK are with Mrs Cooper. It’s always difficult for the children when their usual teacher isn’t in – they do grow to love them and find change hard. Please let me know if your child is struggling so we can put some additional support in for them.

There’s been so much going on in school this week – Mr Turner, from the Royal British Legion was in on Tuesday to talk to the children about Remembrance Day and what life was like for him when he was a boy. The children love listening to his stories of having to go home from school for lunch and not knowing what a banana was when he first saw one!

Today, we have held our Remembrance assembly and the children were so respectful. We sang our Remembrance song and you can see a video of this on our Facebook page.

On Wednesday, class RLA had their first driving lesson! They learnt about road safety and got to drive in a BMW….RLW are doing this next week.

Thank you to all the Reception parents who were able to come to the phonics session last night. We were

very lucky to have the amazing experience of meeting such a

talented Author.

Firstly she talked us through her inspirational life and how she

became a writer, her first writing job was for children’s telly on

BBC. Next she introduced us too some of her books for example:

Billy’s Blitz, Road to London, Run rabbit run and Twist of fortune.

Her latest book has not been published yet but she briefly talked to

us about it. We asked her a variety of questions, one being; which is

your most popular book- to which she answered: Run Rabbit Run.

She enjoys writing historically linked books because she likes going

places, meeting different people and finding out facts linked to the

books.

We wanted to know how a writer creates a novel, so she described

her method as a car journey. It is alright to get side tracked and go

on a different roads, as long as you get back on the main track and

you head towards your destination.

Barbara explained she has always had dog because they make a good

companion. She has always had a dog in her books because they are

courageous and protective of the characters in her stories.

We had the opportunity to buy one of her books, which she

personally signed whilst talking to us individually.

To conclude, we thoroughly being involved in FBA and doing

exciting and enjoyable activities and we are thankful for Barbara

Mitchelhill’s visit.

Yours sincerely,

Kacie, Megan, Eden, Athena and Yasmin!
http://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/images/1024x1024s/news/FBA_Yr6_BMH.jpgThu, 26 May 2016 10:45:16 GMTMrs Foster's Newshttp://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/news/latest/2016-05-18-mrs-foster-s-newshttp://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/news/latest/2016-05-18-mrs-foster-s-news
Mrs Foster’s News

19th May 2016

Well I was all ready to write about sunshine, flowers and all things summer but am now in my winter woolies and my boots typing this today! Reports say we are on for the hottest summer ever…watch this space.

Some dates and news to be aware of:

The end of half term DISCO is on TUESDAY 24th May (next week) – Reception, Y1 and Y2 are 6.30pm-7.15pm and Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 are 7.30pm-8.15pm.

We are delighted that DJ Huntington has found space in his Ibiza schedule to spin the decks for us on the night.

We are still needing some extra hands to help with the sweet stall so please let us know if you can, or just turn up on the night.

The next Friends of Whitefield meeting will be on THURSDAY 26TH MAY at 6pm in school. The children gave 110% throughout their fitness circuit and were very proud of their efforts! Great Britain diver James Denny stepped in last minute for Stuart Robinson and blew us all away with his stories of how he became a diver for team GB, partnering with Tom Daley and winning his silver medal. All back to normal next year though!

On that note, the 2016/17 dates are on the school website – please check before booking holidays! And we have a very late Christmas finish this year so please check those dates if you usually plan a Christmas getaway.

A couple of things to update you on:

Grasshoppers Nursery will be operating from Whitefield Primary School site from Monday 5th September 2016. We are so excited about this partnership and have made lots of plans already with Laura and the Grasshoppers team. We will be starting work on the external area leading up to the old coffee lounge room in the summer term. We are sorting out the drainage (at last, I know!), re-surfacing the top path to the gate as well as putting up the fencing for the nursery outdoor area.

We’ll keep you posted on work timescales and if you are not registered and accessing our school Facebook page (Whitefieldprimaryofficial), please do so as this is a really simple way to get messages out to you all quickly.

More information regarding opening times and fees will be coming out very soon.

The playground is having a revamp over the summer term and summer holiday period too. Mrs Willers has been working with Ms Garry and the school council team to budget and plan for an outdoor area that enhances play and learning. They have looked at three companies and one of them will be providing us with excellent playground markings ready for September. The infant playground will also be resurfaced with tarmac over the May half term – thank you to the Friends of Whitefield team who initiated this request and to all of you for the FoW contribution of £3500 to the project.

Plans will be posted on the school website soon.

We are noticing a number of junior children arriving earlier and earlier to school. I am delighted at their eagerness to be in school, however please remember the children are not supervised until 8.50am when the doors open in readiness for school starting at 9am. BOLA use the playground until 8.40am so any pre-school football games can not start until after they have gone in to school.

And on the subject of BOLA, many of you will know that it currently runs as a separate company to school, renting our premises on a daily basis. From September 2016, BOLA will become part of our school so they will be school staff and will follow the same rules, policies and procedures as we do in school. The club is and will continue to be managed by Emma Wilson and will be line managed in school by Ms King, Assistant Headteacher.

Finally, I hope you all have a lovely two weeks and I am saying my Penwortham sunshine prayers for you all. The Fosters are off to a place called Villefrache-de Queyran, near Bergerac in France which is where we left Sterling Knight, our caravan at the end of the summer. It’s raining there at the moment…have a lovely fortnight, whatever you do.
http://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/images/1024x1024s/news/Mrs_F_pic_3.jpgThu, 07 Apr 2016 13:56:35 GMTBilly Blitzhttp://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/news/latest/2016-04-04-billy-blitzhttp://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/news/latest/2016-04-04-billy-blitz
Year 6 have been taking part in the Lancashire Library's Fantastic Book Awards. Great job boys and you looked so cool!

A date for your diary: Thursday 24th March (the day before Good Friday) is going to be Wear What You Want Day and we would like to raise some money to help with our playground development project that is going to be starting at Easter with the tarmacking of the infant playground (‘at last’ I hear you all cry! Just wait until I tell you about the flooded path work we are getting done soon!). If everyone donates £1 and wears what they want, that’s £365 towards the project which would buy us a bench or a playground marking or two. Plans are at final stages and we will post on the website as soon as they are ready.

I hope you all had a good parents evening this week – if you didn’t manage to get an appointment, don’t worry. Please contact your class teacher via the school office and they will be happy to arrange an alternative time. I hope messages were clear for you regarding our assessment system in school. As most of you will know I love Christmas and everything about it, and suprisingly it wasn’t Milly but Mr Foster who has organised where we will be over the Christmas period – Christmas Day at our house with my mum (you can’t break that tradition – has to be turkey; don’t be messing with geese and other winged birds), Boxing Day at sister number 1’s house in Kendal with the whole family and then a three day break in Bowness after that. I am getting excited tummy about it all and it’s only 15th October!

Talking of Christmas…the Christmas Newsletter will be published next week in time for half term so you can get all your dates in your diaries. For our new families, it’s an amazing community time where we have nativities, productions, carol services, some amazing events via the Friends of Whitefield as well as the Whitefield Choir Christmas Tour 2015 and details of our proposed trips to the pantomime at the Guild Hall.

The Friends of Whitefield excelled themselves on Thursday night last week with a brilliant quiz and curry night in the Brown Hare. Apologies to those of you who I tried to sell quiz answers to in exchange for Peroni…but from seeing some of you this week I think we all had a great time!

Well done and HUGE thanks to Joanne Shorrock and Amy Holden for some seamless organisation; to Lisa and Jason at the Brown Hare for their always fabulous hospitality and brilliant curry, naan bread and poppadums, and to Tash for sorting the quiz and being a great quizmaster!

Some dates for next week:

It’s our Harvest festival on Monday and the children are excited to welcome back Mike Faun from Kings Church. My room is getting full of harvest products – I am so impressed with everything you are sending in (especially the jaffa cakes which have been taunting me all week). We will have so much to give to the food bank and the refuge this year. Keep on sending in your donations – they will be delivered on Monday afternoon.

And on Thursday next week it is our Friends of Whitefield DISCO:

Reception children, Years 1 and 2 is 6.30pm – 7.15pm

Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 is 7.30pm – 8.15pm

Children pay on the door £1.

As the nights are dark, all children MUST be picked up from the disco. Am sure it's easy and is my aim to achieve by the end of the week!!

I was so pleased to see the response to our parent questionnaire which we sent out in the report pack at the end of term. We have had 246 responses so far which is the most we have ever had returned.

Thank you too for all your positive responses and even where you didn't agree with a statement, any written responses were worded with suggestions and I am very greatful for that.

The question which received an overwhelming response in both the ticked box and the comments was the homework question. There were some really good suggestions and some comments saying what you have found good and not so great homework options in the past year! This is our focus for the half term - we are reviewing our policy within school, ensuring there is consistency in approach towards homework and the type of homework across all year groups, and ensuring homework is purposeful and can be child initiated and child-led. We also need to ensure children are prepared throughout the juniors for their transition to high school - when our pupils return to Whitefield after they have started in Year 7 they all say the greatest change and the hardest thing is dealing with the amount of homework they get!

Dates to remember for next week:

Tempest photographers are in on Tuesday 29th for pupil photos

and

Hutton have their open evening on Tuesday 29th at 5.30pm for any Year 6 (or Year 5) boys who are considering Hutton as an option for high school.
http://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/images/1024x1024s/news/Mrs_F_pic_3.jpgTue, 22 Sep 2015 11:01:20 GMTWelcome back! I know we have called a couple of you this week about children walking home, and I thank you for your responses and keeping us informed.

Alongside the newsletter today there will be a form for you to complete showing how your child is getting home after school and who is picking up when. Please complete this and return to school after the half term but remember to update the office of any alterations to this form.

I have been really pleased to see the impact of the parking signs outside school.

I must remind parents however that the entrance to school MUST NOT be used for dropping off or doing 3 point turns. We had a very near miss last week when one of our grandparents was reversing into our driveway and nearly knocked over a child and continued to reverse after the child was pulled clear of the car. The registration of this car has been passed on to the police and I have again contacted the PCSOs to ask for more police presence around our school at pick up times. I know life is busy and we can all be in a rush at times, but the safety of all our children is the most improtant thing for all of us so please do the right thing.

I spoke last week regarding some issues and trouble on the park outside Sainsburys. Please be aware that I have also been contacted by a parent about two men taking photos of a child on the park. This has been reported to the police but please be vigilant and remind your children about the danger of people they do not know. We have found it interesting that some younger children do not really understand what 'stranger danger' means. We are reinforcing this at school using some examples from recent research - what would you do if a man came up to you with a dog lead and a dog ball and asked you to help him find his dog? What if it was a woman?

Many thanks for all you support in these matters.

http://whitefield-pri.lancs.sch.uk/images/1024x1024s/news/budget-laptop.jpgTue, 19 May 2015 10:13:16 GMT
