The Role of the Designated Senior Leader in Keeping Children Safe

SARAH FOSTER Headteacher is the schools Designated Senior Leader (DSL)

SARAH WILLERS (Deputy Headteacher), VICKY KING (Senior Teacher), ANDY JACKSON (SENCo), NATALIE (our learning mentor) and JULIE GARRY (School Business Manager) are all trained as DSLs and act as DSLs when the headteacher is not in school.

The DSL is responsible for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children within the school. This includes being the first point of contact for any concerns regarding a child's welfare, working closely with external agencies, and ensuring that our policies and procedures for safeguarding are followed.

The DSL plays a crucial role in maintaining a safe environment for our pupils, providing guidance to staff on safeguarding issues, and leading training sessions to enhance awareness.

By fostering an open culture, the DSL encourages children to share any concerns they may have, ensuring their voices are heard and acted upon. Safeguarding is part of our curriculum and is drip fed throughout each week in lessons and whole community assemblies.

For more detailed information on safeguarding responsibilities and protocols, we recommend reviewing the Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024 document, which you can access here - (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/keeping-children-safe-in-education--2).

PREVENT DUTY

Prevent is a national programme that aims to stop people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. It works to ensure that people who are susceptible to radicalisation are offered appropriate interventions, and communities are protected against radicalising influences.

Radicalisation can happen when a person develops extreme views or beliefs that support terrorist groups or activities.

There are different types of terrorism, and Prevent deals with all of them.

The most common types of terrorism in the UK are Extreme Right-Wing terrorism and Islamist terrorism.

Find out more about what terrorism means.

Prevent is run locally by experts who understand the risks and issues in their area, and how best to support their communities. These experts include local authorities, the police, charities and community organisations.

OPERATION ENCOMPASS - Partnership between police and schools

Operation Encompass – Hillside Primary School | Baddeley Green | Staffordshire

Operation Encompass is a partnership between police and schools. Its purpose is to enable schools to offer immediate support to children experiencing domestic abuse. The program ensures that all incidents of domestic abuse are shared with schools, not just those where an offense can be identified.
